IPL Auction : Flintoff, Pietersen sold for $ 1.55 million, Full Coverage: IPL 2009
Goa: The IPL franchisees were on the prowl again at Panaji on Friday. And it took just the third bid for a new IPL record to be set.
After Shaun Tait was sold to Rajasthan Royals for $375000 and Jean Paul Duminy to Mumbai Indians for $ 950000, Andrew Flintoff came under the hammer.
Starting with a base price of $950000, the bidding for the star England all-rounder went back and forth before Chennai Super Kings finally clinched him for $1.55 million.
Kevin Pietersen, who had the highest base price for $ 1.35 million, was the next on the block and he soon emulated his teammate.
Vijay Mallya’s Bangalore Royal Challengers snapped up the talismanic English star for $ 1.55 million after a rather tepid bidding war.
Flintoff and Pietersen are now the costliest IPL players displacing Indian skipper MS Dhoni, who fetched $ 1.5 million in the IPL 2008 auction.
In this round, Rajasthan Royals bagged South African T20 specialist and fast bowler Tyron Henderson for $650,000. Bangalore Royal Challengers bought two kiwi players, viz. batsman Jesse Ryder for $160,000 and bowling all-rounder Kyle Mills for $150,000 (base price).
Chennai Super Kings got Sri Lankan all-rounder Thilan Thushara for $140,000 whereas English all-rounder Ravi Bopara went to Kings’ XI Punjab for $450,000.
Five more players got no takers in this round. They are: Australian Phil Jaques, England’s Luke Wright, South African Ashley Prince and Andre Nel and Sri Lankan fast bowler Nuwan Kulasekara.
