New Zealand bowl in series opener

Toss New Zealand chose to bowl v India

Daniel Vettori won the toss and opted to bowl first in chilly conditions in Christchurch. India have had no practice games since landing in New Zealand and will have to bat straightaway in conditions alien to them. The conditions are overcast at the AMI Stadium and being a Twenty20 game, the batsmen will have little time to adjust.

New Zealand have made three significant changes to the side that played Australia in Sydney recently. The explosive Jesse Ryder returns to open after recovering from injury and so does Jacob Oram, though he will play only as a specialist batsman. Ross Taylor missed the Sydney game due to a hamstring pull but he has recovered in time for this game. With Taylor back in the frame, the top order has a settled look. Vettori is the lone specialist spinner.

India made just the one change from their previous Twenty20 match against the Sri Lankans shortly before landing in New Zealand. Harbhajan Singh, who missed the Sri Lankan tour, returns in place of allrounder Ravindra Jadeja. The team has three seamers but the spin attack is rather one-dimensional, with at least three other offspinners to back Harbhajan.
