Fashion has opened to mixed reviews but Priyanka Chopra’s performance has been unanimously noticed. Not many know that Chopra debuted with a Tamil film called Thamizhan. Not many also know that she is a fabulous singer, taken after her father, and was even selected at the state level for the National Opus Honor Choir in the USA. A bundle of talent, and known for being one of the most affable people in the industry, here’s looking at stupendous rise to success.
riyanka Chopra wasn’t sure she wanted to participate in the Miss India contest but did so at her family’s behest. We know the rest. Chopra was crowned Miss India World and then won the Miss World title in 2000. That same year, Lara Dutta won Miss Universe and Dia Mirza won the Miss Asia Pacific crowns in a ripple treat.
Chopra decided to conquer films next, and her debut vehicle was Tamil film Thamizhan, for which she also sang playback. Her Bollywood debut came with The Hero: Love Story of a Spy starring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta. This Anil Sharma directed film was a big-budget one and a big deal for a newcomer.
Though Chopra’s role was a small one, it did get her noticed. Second up was Andaaz, another masala film with Akshay Kumar and Lara Dutta. In a way, this Raj Kanwar film is pretty much considered her full-fledged Bollywood debut. One that earned her the Filmfare Best Debut Award and a nomination for Best Supporting Actress. What a start!
Andaaz was the surprise hit of the year 2003 and Priyanka was being signed up for big projects. However 2004 began on a dismal note with films like Plan, Kismat and Asambhav.
Things turned around, making this the most important year of her career. For one, she appeared opposite Akshay Kumar again in Aitraaz, playing a top boss who sexually harasses her male subordinate. This film, a copy of Demi Moore starrer Disclosure, was a huge hit and got Chopra the Filmfare Best Villain trophy. She was the second woman to have earned it. She also received a Supporting Actress nomination for Aitraaz.
The same year saw her in the breezy Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, a hit comedy starring Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan and directed by David Dhawan
2005 was a mixed bag for Chopra. While there were films like Blackmail, Karam and Barsaat, there was the hit in the form of Waqt: The Race against Time. Chopra was paired opposite Akshay Kumar in the film that also starred Amitabh Bachchan and Shefali Shah.
Another average grosser came in the form of Bluffmaster that was liked by the multiplex audience and had hit songs. 2006 was rocking with Krrish and Don. Krrish, as we all know, had Hrithik Roshan play the superhero and Chopra was his love interest. Her look was severely criticised in the film, and Chopra, the toughie that she is, took it all in her stride.
Don was a remake by Farhan Akhtar and she was paired opposite Shah Rukh Khan reviving the role that was played by Zeeant Aman in the original. The film was a hit in India and a roaring success overseas. It seemed to the industry at that time, that Priyanka Chopra could simply do no wrong.
Honestly, Priyanka Chopra has cemented her place in the industry to an extent that she can take several flops without disturbing her position. Fashion, that opened last month, has Chopra carry the film on her shoulders.
While she doesn’t look the quintessential ramp model, and her make-up in the film is terrible (you can actually see the neck lines), Chopra has done justice to her complex role. Despite mixed reviews, Chopra’s performance has been talked about. How well the film does is yet to be determined. There is already anticipation in the air about her next film Dostana where she is said to have donned a bikini.
